Where do I leave hazardous waste in Sweden?

Hazardous waste contains substances that are harmful to humans and the environment. It must never be thrown in household waste or poured down the drain. In Sweden there is always free collection of hazardous waste at municipal recycling centres.

What counts as hazardous waste?

Paint, glue, solvents, chemicals, oils, fuels, fluorescent tubes, light bulbs, batteries, medicines, spray bottles, plant protection products and anything with a warning symbol (toxic, flammable, corrosive, environmentally hazardous).

Where do I leave medicines?

Left-over medicines are left at a pharmacy — all pharmacies in Sweden are required to accept medicines for free. They must NOT be thrown down the toilet or in the waste.

What do I do with paint and solvents?

Leave them at your municipal recycling centre. An empty paint can can usually be thrown away as metal packaging, but liquids must go to a recycling centre.

Is it safe to store hazardous waste at home?

Store hazardous waste in its original packaging, in a safe place out of reach of children and pets, until you can drop it off. Do not store large quantities of liquid that may leak.
