Textile Recycling in Sweden
Since 1 January 2025, textiles are a separate waste stream in Sweden according to the EU Waste Directive. This means that clothes, home textiles and shoes can no longer be thrown away with household waste.
Where do I leave whole clothes that can still be worn?▼
Donate them to second-hand organisations like Myrorna, Stadsmissionen, Erikshjälpen or Röda Korset. Many municipalities also have textile containers specifically for reuse.
What do I do with damaged textiles?▼
Damaged or worn-out textiles are left in textile containers for material recycling, or at your municipal recycling centre. They must NOT be thrown in household waste.
Are shoes counted as textiles?▼
Yes, shoes and accessories such as bags and belts are also counted as textile waste and must be sorted separately.
Where can I find textile containers?▼
Many grocery stores, car parks and residential areas have textile containers. Your municipality also has a recycling centre where you can always leave textiles. Find your municipality for specific locations.
